The dollar sign $ is used for many currencies in the Americas.
The US, Canada, Mexico, and quite a few more countries use it.
Living in Mexico it took some time to get used to the dollar sign $ in front of prices that were really 20 times more than the US. Everything seemed really expensive until I got used to it.
Surprise is the dollar sign $ started in Mexico and was adopted by many countries to just mean currency.
Locally I just see the dollar sign but on international sites I may see US$, MX$, CAN$, R$, C$ to help people understand which countries currency.
